Always personalize your home interior with your own interests.  Have some of your photos enlarged, matted and framed, then put a grouping of them on the wall.  If you travel and buy items from other places, don't be afraid to put some of these things together when you get home. The reason behind this is that you have your specific decorating taste, but while you travel from place to place, your taste remains the same and will be reflected in everything you choose.
Group items that are basically the same size so you have a sense of scale. This would especially apply to books. About books, mix them up, some upright, some stacked flat. Leave some space in your bookshelves. If you stack a few books, put a decorative item on top of them to give that shelf some added interest.
